Collection of the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health

This piece was commissioned by the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health (Ottawa). They wanted a piece to use in their Diabetes programming.

The outer circle also implies the medicine wheel.  This is the first painting I've done using four identical patterns, as opposed to two-sided symmetry.  The four sided symmetry to me creates a perfect balance - and ultimately it is balance that a person with diabetes or other health problems needs in order to take care of themselves.  A person with diabetes needs to find the balance between nutrition, exercise, monitoring their blood, taking insulin or medication and enjoying their lives without being impeded.

Also, many of the growth patterns of the plants are facing inward and the overall design points inward to the centre.  To me this means that finding health and "balance" is a journey inward into one's consciousness.  One needs to look within to overcome whatever it may be that may keep you from achieving success with your health.  For example, it may be adjusting to foods you aren't used to and staying away from those you enjoy. Or maybe it also requires a person to look at their habits, such as smoking or drinking.  I've learned in my own journey that achieving success in being healthy, requires a steadfastness & perseverance that must come from within.
