The Sound of An Afgan Woman's Shoes As She Walks 2000
Acrylic on Canvas
48" x 60 "
Private Collection

This was painted as a response to hearing the news that a woman was beaten in the streets because her shoes "made too much noise" as she walked. I simply can't fathom the insanity of a society that devalues women so completely. I thought of all the beautiful art that never would have been created if women around the world were treated that way. I thought of Metis women, and the art we created with floral beadwork, it wouldn't have existed. And I thought of women now living there who aren't able to express themselves artistically and how difficult that must be for artists. I wanted to paint something large and bold for all the women artists who aren't able to practice their art.
